Students at Thames studying Social Sciences had a documentary screening on May 19, 2026 . The documentary is titled “Trans Kashmir”, directed by Surbhi Dewan and S.A. Hanan which encompasses the issues of gender, economy and socio-political issues in the state of Kashmir. Our students explored how Trans people in Kashmir live a very different life than any other Trans community through the film and the discussion. The film beautifully depicts the unique cultural aspects, the beauty and most importantly the resilience of this community.
Students also had a fruitful discussion with one of the directors, Ms. Surbhi Dewan about these issues and how policies, politics and the narrative of people around shape everyday lives of Trans people in Kashmir. They also reflected on the current status of the community and how unchanging it is despite the growing acceptance of the Trans community in other parts of the country as well as the world.
This session provided students with a new perspective on how minorities and vulnerable populations are surviving in the world today through the lens of Gender.
