The Man, The Light, The Legend: Electrifying Conversation with Kulman Ghising

Thames International College hosted a powerful and engaging session titled "Electrifying Change: A Conversation with Kulman Ghising" on June 9. The session featured Mr. Ghising, former Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), in a candid dialogue with students and faculty about his extraordinary leadership journey and Nepal's energy future.

Kulman Ghising is best known for his groundbreaking leadership in ending Nepal's chronic electricity load-shedding. He inspired students and audience alike with personal stories from his early career, his tenure at NEA, and the persistent challenges he overcame in turning the nation's energy landscape around. A key takeaway from Mr. Ghising's address was how strategically managing consumer behavior enabled NEA to handle peak power loads efficiently without immediate expansion. He highlighted how unfair electricity distribution favoring large industries had worsened public load-shedding in the past. Through reforms and equitable distribution, NEA reversed this trend.

Under his leadership, NEA transformed from a huge financial loss to profit and extended the accessibility of electricity to over 90% of Nepal. Mr. Ghising emphasized that this success stemmed from ethical leadership, data-driven decisions, and public-focused reform. From navigating political and institutional resistance to optimizing power generation and distribution, he shared key moments of both success and struggle that led to a national transformation that literally took Nepal from darkness to light.

The discussion also delved into Nepal's rich energy potential, especially in hydropower and the emerging opportunities in green hydrogen. Mr. Ghising emphasized the importance of sustainable energy policies, technological innovation, and youth engagement to ensure energy security and economic resilience for the country. Additionally, the interactive program saw enthusiastic participation from students who posed insightful questions on Mr. Ghising's leadership challenges, policy failures, and his views on working in Nepal's public sector.

Organized as a part of Thames International College's commitment to experiential and socially conscious education, the event left students inspired and hopeful about contributing to Nepal's development through innovation and public service.
