P3: Proud Period Project

Social action projects have been a tradition of the Social Work Club of Thames. Board members of each tenure select a theme to work on and plan the social action project accordingly. In recent years the club has donated books to library, conducted self defense workshop for young girls etc. As part of this year's Social Action Project, the Social Work Club of Thames selected menstrual hygiene awareness as its key initiative.“P3: Proud Period Project” was launched to promote awareness, education, and open conversations surrounding menstrual hygiene among adolescents and youth in rural municipalities of Nepal.

In collaboration with Rukmini Foundation and Yuwa Nepal, the club successfully conducted a one-day workshop at Arunodaya Secondary School on 29 May 2026. The program engaged students from Grades 7 to 9 and consisted of an interactive session on menstrual hygiene awareness, addressing common myths, facts, and healthy menstrual practices. To encourage sustainable and accessible menstrual health management, the workshop also included a hands-on cloth pad making session, where students learned how to create reusable sanitary pads. The initiative aimed to empower young people with accurate knowledge, reduce stigma surrounding menstruation, and promote safe and environmentally friendly menstrual hygiene practices.

The social work club of Thames organised fundraising events such as “Christmas Fest”, “Cupid’s Quill”, movie screenings and bouquet making sessions. They also collected donations from college alumni and businesses, and registration fees from general members. These events weren’t organised just for the sake of fundraising but also to promote reciprocity and giving back to the community.

The event started at 11:30 A.M on 29th May Friday,2026. There were around 40-50 participants. The event started with an opening speech from club President Ms. Sambhavi Timilsina. She gave a brief description of the event, its objectives and introduced the club to the participants. Then she thanked the Arunodaya Secondary School and Rukmini Foundation for the co-operation. She also thanked Yuwa Club for assisting us with materials and providing training to the club members. Lastly, she asked consent from students for photo and video documentations which were being done by Shruti (Secretary).

After that an ice-breaker activity took place. Where the students introduced themselves as name_favorite character_caste e.g Sambhavi Daya Timilsina. Then the club members introduced themselves followed by the Rukmini team and Arunodaya’s teacher. And finally the presentation on menstrual health and hygiene began. It was led by Rachana (Joint Secretary), Dipa (Executive Member)  and Shristika (Executive Member). The presentation included topics like menstruation, menstrual cycle and its phases. The participants learned about different phases of the menstrual cycle, what happens during the phase and how it affects the human body. The members shared do’s and don’ts while menstruating. They were given instructions about how to dispose of menstrual wastes such as used pads. The presentation showcased various other menstrual products like synthetic sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups and cloth pads along with their advantages and disadvantages. The team chose cloth pads as they are accessible, cost friendly and sustainable. Cotton flannel also known as falateen is a very popular fabric often used as clothing material for newborns due to their allergic friendly nature, absorbent quality and softness. It’s also the primary choice for making cloth pads for the same reasons.

After the presentation ended, the cloth making workshop began. It was primarily led by Aarav (Event Manager) and Subhekshya (Joint Treasurer)  while other members assisted them. They drew pictures and diagrams to make it easier for the participants to follow the instructions. Logistics tasks such as preparing and distributing materials were taken care of by Monika (Treasurer). Other members assisted her as well. The team was scattered across the classroom so that they could help participants in case of trouble or confusion. The participants were very active and enthusiastic during the workshop. They approached the team members without any hesitation and even initiated casual conversations which helped to create a harmonious atmosphere. After everybody finished making their cloth pads, they were provided with lunch and drinks.

Lastly the team took group photos with participants. The event ended with the club president handing over the token of love prepared by Thames College and SWCT to the principal and Rukmini Foundation. After the event the club members and Rukmini team stayed back to clean up the space. Some participants also stayed back and offered help.

It was a successful project. The participants were very satisfied with the outcome. Some of them wanted to make another pad at their home. They were proudly showing their crafts after finishing. The team fulfilled their objectives and goals of promoting menstrual hygiene among teenagers and using available and sustainable materials.
