The School of Information Technology (SoIT) hosted a hands-on workshop titled "Deploying Web Applications: A Guide to Going Live" on July 10 as a lead-up to the much-anticipated Hack4Sustainability event. Specifically designed for hackathon participants, this session provided a step-by-step guide to taking projects from local development to live deployment. Students learned how to use beginner-friendly and cost-free platforms like Vercel, GitHub Pages, Render, and others to confidently launch their web applications online.
Beyond just technical instructions, participants gained valuable insights into the deployment lifecycle—from preparing a project for deployment and generating a live, shareable URL for demo day, to troubleshooting common deployment issues. The session also emphasized best practices for ensuring a smooth deployment experience, including optimizing file structures, managing repositories, and understanding platform-specific limitations.
By bridging the gap between development and deployment, the workshop empowered participants to present polished, accessible prototypes for Hack4Sustainability and future tech showcases.
