The Silent Flow: A Documentary Screening & Storytelling Session

On June 22, the School of Social Sciences of Thames International College in collaboration with Unity for Change and The Q Initiative hosted a screening for “ Silent Flow: A Documentary on Trans- Menstruation. 

 

The event followed the 15-minutes screening of the documentary and a conversation with Anu Shahi and Samon Chhetri, representatives of the Transmen community as well as of the organization, Unity for Change. The discussion was led by Philosia Sherma representing The Q initiative focusing on the hidden struggles of transmen, their choices and options regarding menstruation. The conversation focused on lived experiences of the speakers as well as other members of their community. The conversation also talked about the position of transmen seeking medical help specially sexual and reproductive health checkups, with these encounters being awkward and uncomfortable as well as the lack of knowledge of the medical professionals. 

 

Students attending the event acknowledged not knowing about the struggles of the trans community and the gendered notions of menstruation and how transmen are excluded from conversation of menstruation and hygiene products. Many participants also talked about the courage they saw in the characters as well as the speakers on embracing their identities and fighting and advocating for their rights.
