Writing Center Tutors Represent Thames at Inaugural National Reading Conference

Marking a significant milestone in the field of education, Ullens School hosted the first-ever National Reading Conference on May 17 and 18. Organized by Ullens Education Foundation in collaboration with the Sikai Foundation and with Kathmandu University School of Education as the knowledge partner, the event brought together passionate educators, facilitators, and professionals to celebrate and explore the transformative power of reading.

Two experienced and dedicated tutors from Thames Writing Center, Kritana Niraula and Sanjeeta Chand, represented Thames International College at the conference. Their participation focused on understanding the evolving role of reading and writing cultures among Gen Z and Gen Alpha; generations deeply shaped by digital media yet still in need of strong literacy foundations.

The two-day event emphasized not only the importance of promoting a reading culture but also highlighted the critical roles libraries and government institutions play in supporting literacy and educational development. The values promoted by this conference strongly align with the mission of the Writing Center and the learning outcomes emphasized in Thames classrooms. For Writing Center tutors, the conference reinforced the idea that reading and writing are interconnected practices that help students become more thoughtful communicators and active citizens.

The conference served as a reminder that nurturing a culture of reading is a collective effort—and one that starts with educators, mentors, and institutions committed to empowering students.

(Thames Writing Center (WC) is a safe space for students to come and seek help with their writing, irrespective of their command over the language or their confidence regarding it. With peer-led tutoring sessions and organized events centered around academic and creative writing, the WC aims to help students become better writers and thinkers.)
